Can it really be?! To worry is to be human. It shows that we care for others. NOT! To the extent that we worry shows the extent to which we still want to be in control. The truth is we are not in control but are deeply loved by the One who is. God calls us to be with Him; to talk to him; to listen to what He has to say. The truth is we are not merely humans but part of a new species (a “new creation” 2 Cor 5:17). A species only seen in Christ and now being formed in His people. It may be human to worry but we are not limited to humanity. Selah!
So let’s take a closer look…
Paul starts with a call not to worry about anything. Jesus says it 8 different times and in different ways in the gospels. “Which of you by worrying can add a cubit to your stature?” (i.e.,or “change anything”) David echoes the same in Ps 37:8 – “Do not worry, it ONLY leads to harm.”
Second, there’s a call to pray in small and big situations. To come near to pray (broad scope) and to supplicate (specific requests with humility). He’s our Dad who wants us to hear Him and to do His bidding in this earth. He’s a good Dad – totally able to do way beyond what we think (or can imagine!) and yet He draws us to work in and through us. Remember according to Rom 8:28 AND 29, He works it all together for His PURPOSE and our good. He then defines His purpose in the next verse – “predestined to be conformed to His image”. It’s far more than getting your prayer list answered; prayer is part of His transformative process where HE sees Jesus forming within us.
And finally there’s the “WITH THANKSGIVING”. So important to the exercise of faith and to seeing our prayers answered. Watching for our answers to prayer without thanksgiving can lead us to discouragement, unbelief and as Jonah said ” a forfeiture of the grace that could have been ours.” Thanksgiving helps us remember who we’re talking to and how GREAT is really is (Eph 3:20)!
The result is “PEACE OF MIND”. Doesn’t matter if the situation is a big crisis or a small one, we can live in peace which I suspect is far more than the absence of conflict but probably touches more of the fullness of life. Check it out.
